Модификационная метилаза, ДНК-модификационная метилтрансфераза — бактериальный фермент, катализирующий перенос метильных групп с S-аденозил-L-метионина на определенные основания в ДНК. Поскольку метилирование таких оснований в сайте узнавания рестриктазой предотвращает процесс узнавания и, следовательно, разрыв ДНК в этом месте, то метилирование защищает бактериальную ДНК от собственного и чужеродного фермента рестрикции. М. м. с высокой специфичностью к определенным последовательностям, узнаваемым эндонуклеазами, используются также для защиты сайтов рестрикции в клонируемых фрагментах ДНК.
